DELRAY BEACH — Denise Scott and her two kids, Madison and Logan, are doing their part to keep 3 people picking up litterDelray Beach clean.

The three were seen Saturday morning patrolling the northwest corner of Lake Ida Road and Congress Avenue for cigarette butts, discarded fast-food wrappers — really every sort of litter. They’re not paid for the work, nor are they part of a formal cleanup effort. They’re just out there because nobody else will do it.

The Scotts live in Rainberry Lakes on Lake Ida. The open lot on the corner is city property, bought a few years ago with the idea in mind of putting up a community center. Tight budgets forced Delray to keep the project to the drawing boards, and in the meantime, the land sits idle.

Denise Scott said she’s complained to officials about the state of the property. But the city still doesn’t do enough to keep it clean, so her son started the one-family weekly litter cleanup effort in January as a community service project for his Cub Scout Pack 308. The problem is exacerbated by the presence of a Palm Tran bus stop.
