Glass Act: The Contemporary Art Glass Movement Turns 50. This survey of contemporary studio glass will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Studio Glass Movement in America. Studio glass describes one-of-a-kind fine art glass pieces made in individual studios rather than glass factories. Glass Act will showcase art glass representative of the full breadth of this defining period in contemporary glassmaking. This exhibition demonstrates the different ways in which glass is used as a medium for contemporary art. Through Oct. 14.

Ahoy Maitz! Pirates & Treasures. Bring the family! This unique exhibition celebrates pirates, myths and legends through the remarkable and imaginative paintings of celebrated artist, Don Maitz. An award-winning painter, Don created the original Captain Morgan Spiced Rum character. His work has been exhibited in museums around the country and featured on the History Channel, Dateline NBC, the Today Show, Ripley's Believe It or Not and others. Through Oct. 28.

Clear Water and Blue Hills: Stories in Chinese Art. The exhibition features works of art depicting tales from Chinese history and literature. The title is taken from a tale in the literary work entitled The Journey to the West. Two hermit scholars, one making a living in the mountains as a woodcutter, and the other as a navigator and fisherman, engage in a musical completion on the zither. The music played on their dueling zithers extolled the beauty found in their solitary lives among clear waters and blue hills. Thru Jan. 27.

The King and I

Delray Beach to distribute free ITC tickets

DELRAY BEACH — The city of Delray Beach once again will partner with the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships to offer free  grandstand seating tickets to all ITC matches. One hundred tickets per session, or a maximum of 200 tickets per day, will be offered to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. The ITC will be held from Feb. 22 through March 3 at the Delray Beach Tennis Center, 201 West Atlantic Avenue. 

Please note that complimentary tickets are limited to two tickets per person per day, either for the day or evening session. Tickets will be distributed in the lobby of Delray Beach City Hall, 100 NW 1st Avenue, between 8 and 10 a.m. Tickets for weekend matches will be available on the Friday before.

 

The Broward Center to host Miami International Piano Festival's Master Series

FORT LAUDERDALE — The Miami International Piano Festival presents the Master Series March 3-5 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.  The three-day classical music festival is dedicated to the musical genius of the French Impressionists as well as a celebration of the 150th anniversary of Claude Debussy's birth. Four distinct programs will be performed over three days and each one focuses on the unique music of the Impressionist period. 

The first performance on March 3 at 3 p.m. is "A Tribute to Debussy and Ravel" and will be performed by Francesco Libetta.  It will include signature pieces such as Debussy's "Elegie" and Ravel's "Mirrors".

The second performance on March 3 at 7:45 p.m. is "Celebrating Debussy's 150th Anniversary," and will be headlined by Konstantin Lifschitz .  The evening will include works inspired by poets and artists of the era. 

The third performance on March 4 at 7:45 p.m. is "Debussy & Ravel Through the Prism of Two Pianos" will feature Francesco Libetta and Konstantin Lifschitz joining forces on the stage to perform "In White and Black" by Debussy, "La Valse" by Ravel, and "Visions" by Messiaen. 

The grand finale is the "French Impressionism's Chamber Jewels" on Tuesday, March 5 at 7:45 p.m. and will conclude the festival weekend with a program of chamber treasures from the French Impressionists, Debussy, Ravel, and Faure.  Pianist Misha Dacic teams up with violinist Gilles Apap and Dimitri Maslennikov on cello to perform Claude Debussy's "Sonata for Cello and Piano" as well as Maurice Ravel 's "Piano Trio in A Minor" and "Violin Sonata".  

Featured speaker Stuart Isacoff will bring to life the worlds of Debussy and Ravel during each program.

Paige Rense to present Cultural Council lecture

paige renseLAKE WORTH — The Cultural Council of Palm Beach County is inviting the public to an exclusive lecture and luncheon with Paige Rense, editor emeritus of Architectural Digest, author, and founder of Bon Appetit. The event is the second in a two-part series entitled, “It’s What You See,” amdwill take place 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. on, March 25, at the Cultural’s headquarters, 601 Lake Avenue, in Lake Worth. The luncheon and program is underwritten by Irene and Jim Karp, Northern Trust and an anonymous donor .

The council’s gallery will be the setting for the lunch; works from 14 Palm Beach County artists will be displayed in exhibit themed Artist as Author. Rense is currently working on a book about the career of her late husband, Kenneth Noland, one of the 20h century’s most famous abstract painters, as well as a book about her 40 years with the magazine.

Boynton Chamber to hold candidates forum

BOYNTON BEACH — The Boynton Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Boynton Beach City Redevelopment Agency are sponsoring a candidates' forum for the upcoming municipal election at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Clayton Conference Center on the campus of Bethesda Memorial Hospital, 2815 Seacrest Blvd., Boynton Beach. Candidates for city commission will discuss the issues facing the city in the upcoming election. Proposed city charter changes also will be discussed.

 

Florida Renaissance Festival returns to Deerfield

DEERFIELD BEACH — Celebrating 21 years of family entertainment fun and historical reenactments, the Florida Renaissance Festival will take patrons back into time showcasing knights on horseback, kings and queens, pirates, fairies, wenches, dancing fools, time travelers and singing merrymen for six weekends from Feb. 9 to March 17 at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach.

A mix of old favorite characters and acts return, such as the Mud Show, Moonie the Magnificent, Washing Well Wenches, Celtic Mayhem, Harper & the Minstrel and others. New popular additions include Jacques Ze Whippeur, dangerous, comedy, romance act, which was one of the featured performers with the legendary Big Apple Circus; The Lost Boys, a cult favorite performing an energetic mix of traditional music and classic rock; Danny Lord, the Lord of Mischief bringing an unpredictable talent of silent clowning and magic; Lords of Adventure, comedy and swordplay fulfilling stories of adventure and a new full cast musical based on Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Nights Dream.
