La France Hotel — Home away from home, Spady Cultural Heretage Museum, 170 NW Fifth Avenue, Delray Beach.The city's historic "LaFrance Hotel" is explored in this retrospective exhibit, as a cultural landmark and iconic symbol of a "home away from home" for African-American musicians, as well as chauffeurs and housekeepers who needed a place to stay during the days of segregation. When the LaFrance opened its doors in 1949, the LaFrance – on Northwest Fourth Avenue – was the only hotel for African-Americans between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. It also became a central gathering place for the community. Come learn what made it special at the Spady Museum. Through February. heir own communities. Through July.

Zenmi - A Taste of Zen: Paintings, Calligraphy, and Ceramics from the Rival Lee Asbell Collection. Morikami Musuem, 4000 Morikami Blvd. Delray Beach. This exhibition features over 80 works of art including paintings and calligraphy mounted as hanging scrolls, inscribed ceramics, and other objects associated with the practice of Zen by Zen masters of the 17th to 20th centuries from the Riva Lee Asbell Collection. Small Wonders: Japanese Snuff Bottles from the Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art. Morikami Musuem, 4000 Morikami Blvd. Delray Beach. Snuff, a ground tobacco product, was used in China during the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1912) to relieve headaches and stomach disorders. This exhibition, organized in part by the Trammel and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art, Dallas, Texas, comprises over 40 exquisite examples of Japanese snuff bottles produced during the Meiji Period (1868 - 1912) for export abroad. On view through January 22.    
    
Outsider Visions: Self-Taught Southern Artists of the 20th Century, Boca Raton Museum of Art, 501 Plaza Real, Boca Raton. Regarded as among the most intriguing areas within 20th-century art, the work of self-taught artists continues to elude categorization. Loosely characterized as work by artists without formal artistic training, the genre of self-taught art (sometimes called folk art or outsider art) covers a diverse array of artistic media, styles, and themes. The artists come from both rural and urban communities, and from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Through Jan. 8.

Portraits from the Permanent Collection, Boca Raton Museum of Art 501 Plaza Real, Boca Raton. From the pensive gaze of Georgia O'Keeffe in profile to the powerful punch of Muhammed Ali’s fist, some of the most iconic images of artists and celebrities are part of the Museum’s collection of portraiture. There’s something about a portrait that can be irresistible and quite revealing. Portraiture captures a single moment, giving us insight into someone’s personality. This exhibition presents more than 50 images in all media - painting, drawing, prints and photography - exploring the intimate as well as very public faces of artists, celebrities, politicians and everyday people worldwide. Through May 13.

The American Society of Marine Artists 15th National Exhibition
A national juried exhibition of 100 oils, watercolors, acrylics, bronzes and more showcasing the beauty of the marine world. and the Cornell Museum is the first of eight stops, nation-wide, for this traveling exhibition. Through Jan. 8.

Diana Nicosia: The World of Color - Italy, Brazil, France and Kuwait. This retrospective exhibition will include 40-50 original oil paintings of the Brazilian rain forest, the Kuwait oil fires, the beauty of Claude Monet's Garden, Giverny, a manmade garden and the Vatican gardens. Paintings are from 1985-2011. Ms. Nicosia's work is in the permanent collections of major museums around the world. Jan. 12 - April 15.

Burlini Studio of the Arts Group Exhibition. 60 paintings by area artists currently studying with nationally recognized visionary artist Christopher J. Burlini. Subjects range from landscapes and portraits, to contemporary pieces. Burlini Studio of the Arts is a premier painting studio located in Boca Raton. The public is invited to the Cornell Museum for the Opening Reception scheduled for Friday, January 13th, 6-9 p.m. Reception admission is $10. Jan. 12 - Feb. 8.
