DELRAY BEACH — Opportunity can present itself in the most unlikely of places. Just ask Cheryl Glickman.
The Delray Beach resident, a dietician by trade, was in a salon having her hair done when something caught her eye — the jewelry collection on display in the shop. Turned out Glickman’s stylist was also a rep for Stella & Dot, a jewelry retailer that relies on independent sales people to sell it wares.
“I fell in love with the line,” Glickman said, adding that she was equally impressed with the amount of money her stylist made selling the jewelry. “I decided to give it a go.”
Glickman did a little due diligence, found Stella & Dot financially sound — among its investors is venture capital giant Sequoia Capital — and the sales opportunities it offered on the up and up.
The rest, as the saying goes, is history. Glickman celebrated the opening of her own independent Stella & Dot business Thursday evening at Union Fusion in downtown Delray Beach.
Glickman doesn’t operate a store, at least not in the traditional sense. Like other Stella & Dot “stylists” as the company calls them, she relies on trunk shows in customers’ homes as the venue to make sales. She called the shows a great way to have a few friends over, drink some wine and have some fun.
She also sells through here own website, and customers can call her as well.
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce Chairwoman Kimberly Comejo toasted Glickman — and the chamber members who turned out for the event. “This is what it’s all about,” Comejo said. “This is what we do.”
Glickman said she was overwhelmed by the turn out.
“If you haven’t heard of Stella & Dot, you will,” Glickman said.
