DELRAY BEACH — This much is clear after three days of Champions Tour play at the Delray Beach ITC: Carlos Moya is in the finals.
Moya of Spain defeated Boca Raton’s Aaron Krickstein 6-4, 6-4 Sunday to win his group in the round robin format with a 3-0 record. He is the only player in the tournament who is undefeated. Ivan Lendl, 2-0 going into Sunday, had a chance to chance to make the finals as well with a win against Johan Kriek but lost 6-4, 6-3 on blustery evening. He must await the outcome of Monday’s match between Kriek and Mikael Pernfors.
Trailing 3-2 in the second set, Lendl had a chance to break Kriek’s service. He lead the sixth game 40-0 but Kriek stormed back to win. Later in the set, Lendl had another chance to break Kriek — tied at 40, the linesman called a fault on Kriek’s serve but Lendl instead conceded the point.
“I don’t know what it was,” Lendl quipped to Kriek, “but I didn’t want you to have a heart attack.”
Kriek plays Mikael Pernfors, who beat Jimmy Arias Sunday evening, at 12:30 p.m.
Monday evening, Chang plays Krickstein; a win puts Chang in the Tuesday’s consolation round. Chang beat Australian Pat Cash 6-4, 6-3.
“Aaron Krickstein won’t be easy to play against,” Chang said. “I’m going to have my hands full but I’m looking forward to it.”
