DELRAY BEACH — For John Macatangay, it was welcome to Delray Beach.
Macatangay celebrated the grand opening of the Great Florida Insurance agency Wednesday with the help of the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce. Members of the chamber, including Chairwoman Kimberly Comejo were on hand for a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“We’re really excited to have you as a member of our family,” Comejo said.
Said Macatangay: “We’re just happy to be part of Delray Beach. I look forward to developing a relationship with the chamber.”
Macatangay’s agency is one of more than 100 independently owned Great Florida offices throughout the state. Ike Peerbhali founded the chain and was on hand for Wednesday’s grand opening.
The agency actually started writing business in December, and opened the office on SE 6th Avenue after the New Year. It handles commercial lines of insurance as well as homeowners and auto.
“If you can think of it, we probably have a market for it,” Macatangay said. “ We can cover everything from a 20-story building to a one-bedroom condo.”
Macatangay is a graduate of the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania. He lived in New York until after 9/11, when he decided to move to South Florida to be with his family. He worked with Enterprise Rent a Car, then spent five years with State Farm. The insurance giant isn’t opening any new agencies in Florida, so he went with Great Florida.
Macatangay has one employee at this point — Eileen Abate, his mother-in-law — but he plans one establishing two internships this summer for students looking to learn the business and learn marketing.
