Fetzer resigns seat; Delray commissioners seek replacement

By Palm Beach Business.com

DELRAY BEACH — Fred Fetzer has resigned his seat on the Delray Beach City Commission, effective August 1.

Fetzer, a retired Bellsouth executive, cited personal reasons, including health, in a letter to City Manager David Harden and the city commissioners. Fetzer missed the first two July commission meetings and will miss Tuesday evening’s meeting as well. He has the longest tenure on the commission, having served since 2006. He won a third two-year term in office during the 2010 city election. Term limits would have ended his commission service at the end of March.

“I would (like) to have more time to spend with my family and address some recent health issues I have recently had,” Fetzer said in his letter. “I love Delray Beach and will continue to keep my primary residence here … .

“I moved to Delray Beach in 1982 and it was a much different city then. I am proud to have participated in the many positive changes that have occurred in our city. My chief objective since being elected in 2006 has been to keep the city headed in the right direction. I am proud of the continued success of our Village by the Sea.”

According to a memo from Harden, the four remaining commissioners must fill the position within two regular meetings after the resignation or a special election must be held. The new commissioner will serve until after the March 2012 city election but will be eligible to seek a full two-year term.

That timetable gives commissioners until the August 16 meeting to fill the vacancy.

Harden suggested that the city publicize the vacancy, with applications taken until July 29. Commissioners could interview candidates in the interim.

Fetzer’s resignation comes as commissioners prepare the budget for the 2012 fiscal year, which begins October 1.  The last couple of years, he has been a staunch opponent of raising taxes even as revenue declines.

Fetzer is the third commissioner to resign his seat mid-term during the previous four years.
