Jobless rate falls in Florida, rises in Palm Beach, Broward

By Palm Beach Business.com

DELRAY BEACH — Unemployment fell statewide in June but rose in South Florida, according to Florida’s Agency for Workforce Innovation, which released its monthly jobs report Friday.

More encouraging, as many industry sectors recorded jobs gains as recorded job losses for the first time since the recession began nearly three years ago.

The statewide jobless rate fell to 11.4 percent from 11.7 percent in May. A year ago, the rate sat at 10.5 percent. The number of Floridians out of work fell to 1.056 million from 1.084 million last month. Numbers are adjusted for seasonal factors that influence employment levels.

In Palm Beach County, the jobless rate rose to 11.8 percent from 11.2 percent in May and 11.0 percent in June 2009. The number out of work totaled 72,943 compared to 69,327 a month earlier and 68,467 year earlier.

In Broward, the rate rose to 10.1 percent from 9.7 percent in May and 9.5 percent a year ago. Broward residents out of work totaled 99,465, up from 95,668 in May.

County figures, unlike the state numbers, are not seasonally adjusted. A large portion of the increase in joblessness is likely due to seasonal factors.

Over the past 12 months, construction lost 28,000 jobs, or 7.2 percent of the sector’s total; finance lost 22,000 or 4.5 percent of its total; manufacturing lost 10,800 jobs, or 3.3 percent.

As usual private education and health care gained jobs, 29,600 of them during the 12 months through June. That sector has been the one consistent bright spot in Florida’s drab jobs market. Also, government added 19,400 jobs; professional and business services added 16,300 jobs.
