By Palm Beach Business.com

DELRAY BEACH —  Unemployment held steady statewide in June, while shooting up in Palm Beach County for seasonal reasons, Florida’s Department of Economic Opportunity reported Friday.

The statewide jobless rate came in at a seasonally adjusted 8.6 percent, same as in May but well below the 10.7 percent reported a year earlier. The actual number of unemployed: 795,000, same as May’s number but down from 984,000 recorded in June 2011.

Palm Beach County saw its jobless rate jump to 9.2 percent in June from 8.6 percent a month earlier. A year ago, the rate sat at 11.2 percent. The number of unemployed in June: 57,189, up from 53,530 in May but below the 69,426 of June 2011.

County numbers, unlike the state, are not adjust for seasonal factors, and unemployment in South Florida typically rises in June as the school year ends and the summer slowdown in tourism begins.

“Area employment is traditionally slower in the summer months and the pace mainly reflects a seasonal decline in leisure and hospitality jobs,” Workforce Alliance CEO Steve Craig said. “On a positive note, the county gained 5,700 jobs and more than 3,600 job openings compared to last year.”

Workforce Alliance is the agency that handles the state’s jobs programs in Palm Beach County.

The pattern held true in Broward County, where the jobless rate rose to 7.7 percent, up from 7.3 percent in May. A year ago the rate sat at 9.6 percent, according to DEO.

Industrial sectors in Palm Beach County that added jobs during the 12 months through June include: professional and business services, up 5,600; education/health services, up 3,100; trade/transportation/utilities, up 1,300; government, up 1,000; and construction, up 100. Those shedding jobs include: leisure and hospitality, down 4,600; financial activities, down 500; and manufacturing down 200.
