DELRAY BEACH — For a cardboard cutout, Flat Stanley is a heck of a fundraiser. Chuck Halberg and Jimmy Christe ain’t bad either.

The three combined to raise $13,000 for charity during a 23,000-mile, 22-state tour called Flat Stanley rides a Harley for Kids and Cops. Five charities received an equal slice of the take Wednesday evening at Delux in downtown Delray Beach.

The recipients were: the Achievement Center for Children and Families; the CJ Foundation; the Delray Beach Education Foundation; Prep and Sports, and Delray Citizens for Delray Police. Each received checks for $2,612.89 cents.

The venture started as the annual vacation trip for longtime friends Halberg and Christe — they’ve done similar rides the past couple of years — but this summer, it morphed into a fundraising effort. As their mascot, they chose Flat Stanley, a character from a 1964 children’s book that has become the focal point for a literacy movement. Flat Stanley also travels alot and shows up in unusual places.

Joining Halberg and Christe for the entire trip: John “Mad Dog” Looney. Pam Halberg and Ilene Looney, the wives of Chuck and John, respectively were along for most of the way.

The Boca Raton law firm of Cohen Peterfriend pledged $5,000; others agreed to donate based on certain goals — pictures of Flat Stanley at state signs and state capitals; Flat Stanley with police officers; Flat Stanley with dogs; Flat Stanley with newspapers and more.

Some even pledged on the number of salads Halberg ate as an incentive to keep his weight down.

“It was just a great journey, a great time,” Halberg said. “Next year, Alaska!”
