DELRAY BEACH — Dr. Delia Weiss’ office looks like anything but the traditional medical setting. Yet it is. And it isn’t.

The lighting is soft; the furniture appropriate for a living room than a clinic. The exam table, the only conspicuous piece of medical equipment, is tucked away in a corner of a room that feels more like a home office.

The low-key look isn’t an accident. It's part of what Weiss calls an integrative approach to her practice that combines both alternative and traditional, science-based medicine.

“I was striving for that,” says Dr. Weiss, an internist by training. . “I wanted to reduce stress.

“People appreciate the calm atmosphere.”

Dr. Weiss, who recently, celebrated the opening of her downtown Delray Beach office with city officials and members of the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce, said there’s enough stress involved in a medical appointment to put people on edge. The more homey setting hopefully makes her patients more comfortable.

But there’s also a clinical reason for the nontraditional décor. By making her office more inviting, more comfortable, she says she can get more accurate information about her patients and allows her to better address their needs.

The alternative side of her practice is intended to keep her patients well; lifestyle things like exercise, yoga and meditation that help reduce stress outside her office. She will prescribe natural supplements and nutrients for her patients as well, but based on scientific studies rather than popular beliefs. And she practices what she practices.

“That’s how I came up with the idea to encourage other people to do these things because I do them myself,” Dr. Weiss said.

But when her patients do have a problem, she turns to her traditional medical training.

Dr. Weiss is a graduate of Cornell University, earned her medical degree at the University of Illinois and is a diplomate of the American National Board of Medical Examiners. She practiced in New Orleans until Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005. She moved to Miami, where she grew up.

She migrated north, and set up practice in Delray Beach, finding the city much like a smaller version of New Orleans. She sees her practice evolving into what she had back in the Crescent City.

“Atlantic Avenue is like Magazine Street in New Orleans,” Dr. Weiss said. “It’s such an eclectic area.”
