DELRAY BEACH — Elvis was there, Santa was there, and so were thousands of others, who jammed Old School Square and downtown Delray Beach to witness the annual lighting of the city's massive100-foot Christmas tree.
The evening was planned as spectacularly as the tree itself, with Santa landing by helicopter courtesy of WPEC Channel 12 shortly after 7 p.m. Delray Beach Mayor Woodie McDuffie hit the switch a few moments later.
The second night of Hanukkah was celebrated with the lighting of the second candle of the city menorah earlier in the evening.
About 500,000 are expected to view the tree by the time it comes down on Jan. 3.
Other key dates at the tree: Dec. 11, Kid’s Day at the Tree. At 6 p.m., the annual holiday parade will take place down Atlantic Avenue; Dec. 31, First Night, Delray’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration. Cost for the event: $10 in advance, $15 on the 31st.
