Broward County woman faces prison for tax filing scheme

FORT LAUDERDALE — A Broward County woman is facing prison after pleading guilty to federal wire fraud and identity theft charges in connection with a scheme to file fraudulent income tax returns and then collect the refunds.

Dorothy Boulin, 29, faces as much as 22 years in prison for the scheme; she is scheduled to be sentenced on July 5.

According to court documents, Boulin received a list of U.S. Marines complete with names and social security numbers for purpose of filing fraudulent income tax returns under their names.  On one occasion, Boulin filed six returns in the names of the marines through an online tax filing service. Boulin collected refunds on five of the returns totaling $21,301.

On a second occasion, Boulin filed eight more returns, collecting $32,627 in refunds. Several but not all the victims were marines.
