Sale of Briny Breezes best course for residents

By ROGER BENNETT, Mayor of Briny Breezes

BRINY BREEZES — On the evening of May 22nd, a town hall meeting to discuss the future of Briny Breezes was held in Delray Beach, Florida. The simple fact that a meeting about Briny was held some place else is but one example of a process gone awry in discussing the future of our city.

Earlier this year, after what all Briny residents agreed was a heart-wrenching decision, we opted to sell our homes to Boca Raton-based Ocean Land Investments. The reality of hurricanes, lack of insurance for many of our mobile homes, and a failing infrastructure led us to realize that this was by far the best course of action.

After a diligent bidding process from more than 170 national developers, we opted to move forward with Ocean Land Investments. They were local, conscientious, and genuinely interested in us, and the future of Briny.

While it is our every desire to ensure that our legacy at Briny is a world-class community, our neighbors have engaged us in a negative campaign, hidden behind what amounts to a well-funded political action group they have called the Florida Coalition for Preservation.

The Florida Coalition for Preservation, which sounds like average folks trying to preserve Florida, is mostly a group of very rich people working to control the destiny of Briny Breezes.

They claim to have an army of supporters, yet the only people ever seen are our wealthy neighbors to the north and south. They have amassed a huge war chest for their attacks, all hidden behind this innocent-sounding organization.

A few months ago we were `that trailer park down the street.' All of a sudden, we are a bit of old Florida that must be preserved. Right! Heaven help us if we tried to control them, but apparently it's okay if they try to control us.

Florida Coalition for Preservation, you need to get a new title — maybe something better suited a small, but very wealthy membership list.

Florida Coalition for Preservation nothing but a pseudonym for `A Few Rich Neighbors Who Want to Control Briny.’
