DELRAY BEACH — If there is one constant at the Delray Beach Open tennis tournament, it's that inevitably top seeds lose.

That held true Wednesday night as unseeded Yen-Hsun Lu upset the tournament's No. 1 seed, Kevin Anderson 7-6(6) 6-3 in the night cap at the Delray Beach Tennis Center. Second seed and top American player John Isner went down Tuesday night at the hands of Marinko Matosevic.

Anderson, a Gulfstream resident from the Republic of South Africa, came into Delray ranked 15th in the world. Lu came in at 61,

Lu , a head shorter than Anderson, who is officially listed as 6' 8", couldn't match Anderson's powerful serve, scoring three aces to his opponent's 12. But he just played clean tennis, scoring better off his serve and effectively returning Anderson's.

This was the third time Lu has made it as far as the second round at Delray. It will be his first appearance in the quarter finals.

Croatia's Ivo Karlovic, the No. 4 seed, barely survived upset himself Wednesday, needing tiebreakers in both sets to beat 18-year-old Thanasi Kokkinakis of Austrailia 7-6(4) 7-6(2). No. 3 Alexandr Dolgopolov did not play Wednesday. He faces American Tim Smyzcek on Thursday.

The tournament's fifth and seventh seeds advanced Wednesday. Adrian Mannarino, the fifth seed, beat wild card entrant Denis. Kudla of the U.S. 6-2, 6-2, while seventh seed Steve Johnson beat the tournament's youngest remaining player, 17-year-old Andrey Rublev of Russia, 6-3. 6-3.

In doubles play, the Bryan Brothers, Bob and Mike won their first round match 6-3, 7-5 over Mannarino and Dustin Brown of Germany. The team of John-Patrick Smith and Michael Venus beat James Cerretani of the U.S. and Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia 6-2, 7-6(8).
